Where to Find Free Online Access to Building, Energy and Electrical Codes

This course has a live component: you'll receive a link to join a live-virtual Zoom meeting at 4 PM Eastern on March 25, 2025 once you enroll in this course. You'll also have access to the recording in this learning management system. We'll send you an email notice once the recording has been published.

Building codes set the minimum standards for safety in our buildings (houses are buildings). Building codes govern all of us so it’s important to have a basic understanding of building codes. That understanding includes where to find free online access to building codes.

In this meeting, we’ll walk you through the following:

  • How model building codes are created.
  • The difference between building and energy codes.
  • Where to find free online access to model codes from the International Code Council.
  • Where to find free online access to model codes from the National Fire Protection Association.
  • State process example: how Georgia adopts and amends building codes.
  • State amendment example: how to find Georgia amendments.
  • Local process example: how counties and cities adopt and amend building codes.
  • Local process example: how to find county and city amendments.
  • Definition of “stretch-code” and “code-plus” programs and amendments.

When we finish our meeting, you’ll be able to look up building code language on your own. That means you’ll be empowered to confirm a person is correct when they tell you you can or can’t do something because of the building code(s).

We look forward to seeing you at 4 PM Eastern on March 25, 2025 in our Zoom meeting!
