Building Science: Key Principles for Creating a Healthy + Comfortable Home

This course will help you understand how your house works so you can gain control over your indoor environment and avoid common in-home health and comfort problems. It will also help you reduce your operating and maintenance costs. This content applies to all housing types.

Why this is important to you...

A successful home controls the flow of water, air, vapor and heat to gain control of its indoor environment – the spaces in which we live. Gaining control over our indoor environment allows us to protect our health and comfort from uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, allergens and irritants outside our homes. A bit of fundamental knowledge, planning and testing is all you need to do this well.

This course is designed to explain the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the four control layers of homes. We’ll present examples and details to help you understand the fundamentals of how houses work. You can apply this knowledge in planning, operation and maintenance decisions to maximize your health, comfort and efficiency at home.

Here are some of the topics we’ll cover:

  • Balance of Cost + Performance

  • Why + How to Control an Indoor Environment

  • Control Layers: House As a System

  • Rain Control Layer – Bulk Moisture

  • Air Control Layer

  • Vapor Control Layer

  • Thermal Control Layer – Heat Flow

  • Radon Control Systems

  • Building Science vs Green Building Certifications

As always, we’ll make our review in terms you can understand and use when speaking with contractors, home inspectors, etc.  We invite your questions as we go so we can be sure you get the most value out of this course.
