Elbert Hubbard, following in the footsteps of William Morris in England, became one of the fathers of the Arts & Crafts movement in America.
He founded a reformist community in 1895 in the village of East Aurora, New York, just outside Buffalo in the western part of the state.
Take this virtual tour to learn more about the Arts & Crafts movement, guilds, their importance and lasting impact!
This course is a recording of a live virtual meeting. We provide contact information at the end of the meeting in case you have a question and want to follow up with us.
Here are some examples of topics we'll cover during the virtual tour...
The former power plant of the campus is now a museum and teaching/lecture space; one of many original buildings still in use on the Roycraft campus.
Printing is an important part of the Roycroft story… where it all begins. These are hand-made blocks for printing.
Roycroft artisans were very influential in copper crafts. These pieces are in the museum on the Roycroft campus.
Virtually everything in the Roycroft museum, such as the furniture and fixtures above, was made by Roycroft guild members.
Some of the pieces are more delicate than others. Can you imagine learning to make something so beautiful - building a skill set to bring your ideas to life through practice and mentorship?
You can still learn crafts at Roycroft! This is a demonstration of book binding that results in a journal for each participant.
Enroll now for this virtual tour and let us know what questions or guidance you have!
We hold frequent meetings so we have an opportunity to check in with you. We welcome your off-topic questions… related to architecture.
