Building projects have a budget so building components are in competition against one another for priority – it doesn’t make sense to invest in beautiful finishes if the building won’t withstand the challenges of its environment.
Join us to learn how you can determine what challenges a building (houses are buildings) needs to meet: flooding, high winds, wildfires, earthquakes and more.
We’ll help you identify what challenges a property faces and review what tools, technologies + techniques are available to help a property endure those challenges. This will help you prioritize investments in building components like structure, insulation and cladding so you can protect your household.
We’ll conclude with a review of creating a disaster response plan for your family and what to expect from a government response to a natural disaster.
We’re planning to cover the following:
- Identify common natural disasters for which we should be prepared.
- Determine what natural disasters are common to a property.
- Find the flood risk map for a property.
- Explain the effects of wind loads on buildings.
- Use building codes and code‐plus programs as a guide for strengthening buildings against high wind loads.
- Summarize how to incorporate a tornado shelter into a property.
- Describe how to manage wildfire risk through urban/wildland interface and construction.
- Explain how to identify and manage seismic risks.
- Summarize disaster response: creating a family plan and what to expect from government.
We invite your questions and comments at any time through our Support page or join us for office hours (details below).
