The Georgia Department of Community Affairs Board of Directors has voted on building code changes that will take effect on the first day of 2026 – just a few months away. Georgia’s building codes affect everyone in the state – whether they live here or are just visiting.

Many of the building code changes will effect residential construction so we’ll walk through the coming building code changes to help you prepare for the new requirements. Along the building code changes, there are significant updates to the electrical code that will affect townhouses plus one- and two-family dwellings.

Discussing these amendments will help you better understand challenges in existing construction so you’ll know what to do if you’re having these issues or encounter them later. Some of the amendments are designed to lower the cost of construction so we want to make sure you’re aware of them.

In addition to reviewing the changes that have been adopted, we’ll review some of the proposals that were not adopted. Reviewing some of the proposals that weren’t accepted will give you more perspective about the work of building code adoption in the State of Georgia.

As with all of our meetings, we welcome your questions in advance and during our meeting. We also welcome off-topic questions. Our meetings are an opportunity for us to learn how we can assist you. What challenges are you addressing?

To help you prepare for this meeting, we encourage you to take our course about where to find online access to the building codes. The course is virtual so you can take it anytime, anywhere. It’s also short – it’s not three hours like some of our other courses. You’ll get a valuable overview of how building codes are developed and how to access them so you can better understand updates like our upcoming meeting on building code changes.
