Residential Building Code: Navigating the Safety Requirements + Limitations Governing All Homes

Though we're impacted by the code every day, few people understand it… or even know where to find the language. This course will help you make more informed decisions about safety, maintenance and improvement.

why this course content is important to you...

The residential building code affects us every day. The code sets the standards for construction to help keep us safe and the uniformity the code sets for elements like stairs, handrails and guards helps us avoid significant injuries.

We designed this course to walk you through the residential building code to explain how and why it sets the minimum safety and performance standards for our homes. This course makes the building code accessible to homeowners and real estate professionals alike.

You’ll be empowered to check when someone says you must or can’t do something because of the building code. You’ll be able to use the building code as a guide when responding to a safety concern or a home inspection report. We’ll also show you examples of when you may wish to exceed the requirements of the building code for valuable improvements in quality and performance.

Examples of the content we’re planning to review include:

  • Scope of the residential building code – which projects fall under the code
  • Definitions – the language of the building code
  • Design criteria – conditions in your area
  • Minimum safety requirements
  • Minimum dimensions for various spaces
  • Means of egress – safety in dangerous situations
  • Fall protection
  • Glazing requirements
  • Chapters on foundations through roof and chimneys
  • Chapters on building systems
  • Reference standards
  • How to use the appendices
